Why Oneira Drop 01 Is 500 Units — and Why the Counter Can't Lie
We capped our first drop at 500 units and made the availability counter server-enforced. Here is the exact mechanism, and why honest scarcity beats urgency theater.

Every store on the internet tells you supplies are limited. Countdown timers reset at midnight. "Only 3 left!" banners appear on products that have warehouses full of stock. The FTC literally wrote a report about these tricks. So when we capped Oneira's first release at 500 units, we knew the claim would earn exactly as much trust as it deserves: none — unless we could show the mechanism.
This post explains how Drop 01's limit actually works, at the database level, and why we built it this way.
What Drop 01 is
Drop 01 is one shared pool of 500 paid units across all eight Oneira editions, at $139 each plus shipping and tax, shipping to U.S. addresses only. When unit 500 is purchased, paid checkout closes. The next release, Drop 02, is announced for March 31, 2027 — joining its list reserves nothing and costs nothing.
How the counter is computed
The availability number on the preorder page is not a marketing string. It is calculated by the store's database from two things: paid orders and active checkout holds. When you start checkout, the store places a short-lived hold on your units so two people cannot buy the same unit at the same moment. If you pay, the hold becomes your order. If you walk away, the hold expires and those units return to availability.
The same transaction that checks availability also serializes every concurrent checkout attempt, which means overselling is not a support headache we handle later — it is a state the system cannot enter. If the pool is exhausted, checkout refuses to take your money.
Numbered units, no take-backs
Every paid Drop 01 order is assigned its unit numbers in purchase order — the first buyer holds unit 001. If someone cancels inside the 24-hour buyer-remorse window and gets their refund, their unit numbers are retired, not resold. We would rather ship fewer than 500 numbered units than quietly re-issue "limited" numbers twice.
Frequently asked questions
- How many units are in Oneira Drop 01?
- 500 paid units total, shared across all eight editions. When the 500th unit is purchased, paid checkout closes until Drop 02.
- Is the Oneira availability counter real?
- Yes — it is computed by the store's database from paid orders plus active checkout holds. Expired unpaid holds return to availability, and the same transaction that shows the number also enforces it at purchase time.
- Do refunded Oneira orders go back on sale?
- The capacity may be freed, but the numbered units are not re-issued. If unit 042 is refunded, no future buyer receives unit 042.
- When is Oneira Drop 02?
- Drop 02 is announced for March 31, 2027. Joining its update list does not reserve inventory or collect payment.
