Begin with an emotional sentence

Before drawing, define what the face is doing in plain language: noticing someone nearby, recovering from surprise, becoming sleepy, or showing affection after a tap. That sentence prevents an animation from becoming attractive but directionless.

The eyes can then be designed around the action. Their shape, spacing, and movement should make the emotion readable in the first beat, before any decorative particles or color changes arrive.

Build families, not isolated clips

An expressive system needs entries, holds, exits, and bridges between moods. A love face might include a quick recognition, a bounce, floating hearts, and a calm return. A sleepy family needs a different pace and cannot reuse the same exit without feeling abrupt.

Grouping assets by behavioral role makes the firmware easier to reason about and keeps the character consistent even when the library grows.

Judge it on the real screen

Desktop previews hide important problems. Thin lines may disappear, motion blur can overwhelm small shapes, and colors can shift on the actual panel. The enclosure window may also crop more than the animation tool suggests.

High-quality outputs earn their place through hardware review. A smaller library of faces that survives the real display is more valuable than a huge folder of untested animations.
